HELP!

Dear Readers,

Sitting here folding laundry I've come upon a problem that's been bugging me for some time. Decided it's time for a shout out...maybe someone out there in the wide world of blogging has a suggestion for me.

Baby spit up; it stinks. No really, it has quite a stench. Problem is that after the burp cloths have come out of the wash they STILL STINK. I love that clean laundry smell and when I get a wiff of baby spit up from something that should have that fresh out-of-the-wash smell I'm, well, disgusted.

I use Tide and have already tried using extra detergent, washing in hot water, and using bleach. Any other suggestions? Has anyone else had this problem or are we just destined to be the stinky family on the block? Is there something I can add to the load that would get rid of this stuff?

Help if you can, sincerely,
Passed out in stinkland

well i heard once if you put a few sprays of perfume in your conditioner bottle then your hair will smell good...so i'm thinking maybe just add a few drops of your favorite fragrance in your load of laundry?... either that or straight in Vi's bottle and scent the root of the problem. ;)

I wouldn't let Meg babysit for you anymore---who knows what sort of fragranced things she might be feeding your child!

Have you tried using Oxy Clean in addition to your Tide? I am not sure if it will work or not. My kids did not spit up a whole lot so I did not have that problem. By the way I am so excited about the blog book, kind of like scrapbooking. (I don't know if that is one word or not?)Thanks for sharing that info, and by the way Violet is WAY CUTE!!!!

Yea Jen! Finally a REAL suggestion! Crazy sisters. I don't even know what Oxy Clean is...I mean I've seen it but wasn't sure what it was used for. I'll definitely check it out! Thanks for the comment :).

When Uncle John suffered with the chemo sweats his clothing would get the toxic smell to them too, so I know what you mean. Get any essential oil, lavender has a nice calming influence, but if you like other aromas choose your favorite. Put 5 drops or so on a cotton washcloth and use it like a dryer sheet. You can just add more drops to the cloth for 5 or 6 loads, then wash it and start over. Our favorites were lavender and eucalyptus, but there is a citrus oil too that was very nice too.

Love you,

Aunt Mare

Mmmm, this sounds wonderful, Aunt Mare. I may have to do this with all my laundry. :)

Good luck on the smell and the stain. I have so many stained baby clothes from Jude. They don't smell but they look awful.

We use cloth diapers and the best thing to add to the wash that makes everything smell fresh (and messy diapers are hard to get smelling fresh!) is Tea Tree Oil. Add a couple drops to each load with the detergent. It's pretty potent so you don't need much!

Erin, I used a pretreating spray called Totally Toddler (got it at Babies R Us)...it's an enzyme spray so it helps dissolve organic/food substances sometimes better than a regular stain stick (or try dish detergent...made to get food stuff off/out). Also, sometimes when you wash stuff in hot water (particularly milky stuff) it will "bake" the spot in there before it gets a chance to wash it out. Maybe try pretreating with an enzyme cleaner or soaking in the sink with a bit of dish detergent for a while and then washing them? One time I even used dishwasher detergent (just a tad) to soak some dirty white cloth napkins before I threw them in the wash. Cleaned those suckers right up. Just be careful with the dishwasher deterg...it'll tear your hands up if you stick 'em in too long! Sorry this is long, but hope it is helpful! Good luck!
